2019-20

Principal's Message

Dear Rancho Parents, Students, and Community,

I want to welcome you to the 2019-20 school year at Rancho Milpitas Middle School! This will be the 52nd year that Rancho serves the middle school kids in our community and we look forward to continuing a tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, and in supporting our students’ socio-emotional wellness. Our staff care deeply about each and every one of our students. To create a sense of belonging for each of our students we place them on one of five teams:

All Stars: 7th grade

jOURney: 7th grade

Innovators: 7th/8th grades

Trailblazers: 8th grade

Masterminds: 8th grade

Each team has a set of core teachers who actively and regularly collaborate to determine how to provide the optimal environment and experiences for students. Teaming is how we assist students in their transition from elementary to secondary school as they are in a stage and at an age of adolescence during which many changes take place and pose challenges. These changes tend to be in the areas of physical, social, emotional, intellectual growth, among others. By having multiple caring adults interacting with and guiding our students we can help them reach their full potential as young adults prepared for their future.

The impact that you have as support providers is without equal. Your role in your children’s educational experience at Rancho shifts slightly as you help them to develop greater self-advocacy skills, such as asking a teacher for help when needed, or seeking guidance from the counselor in the office when they have a question or concern. Encouraging your child to speak with their teacher before or after class or after school, or to fill out and submit a “request to meet with counselor form”, or to email any adult on campus with which they wish to meet, are examples of how you can do this. Helping your child do these things will lead to greater confidence in their ability to work through difficult or challenging situations, of whatever nature they might be (academic, social, etc.).

We encourage you, our Rancho families, to be actively involved at Rancho in meaningful and important ways. Opportunities for our community members in 2019-20 include the following:

PIQE (Parent Institute for Quality Education)—we partner each year with PIQE, a professional organization, to provide parent workshops that prove invaluable as you learn the ins and outs of our school system from middle school to college. Meetings are held on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm in Spanish (room 28) and English (Rancho library). Free child care is provided.

School Site CouncilWe meet monthly beginning on Monday, September 9 at 5:00pm in the Rancho library to review our School Plan and accompanying budget for the multiple action items. Your input, perspectives, and questions are needed as we look at the results of our efforts.

English Language Advisory Council (ELAC)ELAC will meet four times during the year beginning on Thursday, September 12 from 7:00pm-8:00pm with Raul Patino. ELAC will discuss important topics related to our English Learner program such as Reclassification criteria, ELD classes, and more.

PTSAOur newly elected PTSA president, Scott Duffey, is excited for the work he will lead this year. Rancho PTSA has their first meeting on Monday, September 9, at 6:00pm in the Rancho library.

In addition to the above options and opportunities, we also have a constant need for chaperones for field trips. Please reach out to your students’ teachers for more information about how you can be a chaperone this school year.

Thank you for entrusting us with your children this year. We will provide a safe and welcoming campus experience for each student to enable them to thrive. I look forward to meeting you in person as we begin the year our registration days (Thursday, August 8 & Friday, August 9 from 8:30am-12:00pm), followed by our Back-to-School night on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to meet with me. You can reach me at cmcmurra@musd.org or 408-635-2656, ext. 3106. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer activities.

Sincerely,
